Kenya eTA on a Nairobi layover: what to check before you leave JKIA

Short answer: if you stay inside the transit area at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), you are not entering Kenya. The moment you want to walk out of the terminal, even for three hours, you go through immigration like any other visitor, and that normally means holding an approved Kenya eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) or belonging to a group that is exempt. Entry rules change, sometimes with little notice, so treat this page as a checklist and confirm the current rules for your passport on the official portal, etakenya.go.ke, before you book anything.

This guide is written for one specific situation: you have a long connection at JKIA and you are wondering whether you can use it. What we can do is explain how the decision works, the order to do things in, and how much of your layover actually ends up outside the airport.

Transit or entry: the decision that matters

Every layover traveller at JKIA falls into one of two groups.

You stay airside. You walk from your arrival gate to transfer security and on to your departure gate. You never pass a passport desk for entry, and you never collect your bags. It is the safest option for short connections.

You go landside. You pass immigration, enter Kenya and can leave the building. This is what you need for a game drive in Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre or a city tour. It is also what you need if your connection is on two separate tickets and you have to collect bags and check in again.

The eTA question only applies to the second group. So the first step is simply deciding which group you want to be in.

What the Kenya eTA is, in plain terms

Kenya moved to an online pre-travel authorisation for most visitors. Instead of arriving and sorting out paperwork at the airport, you apply on the official portal before you fly, upload what it asks for and wait for approval. The approved eTA is then checked at immigration when you arrive.

A few points are worth understanding before you start:

  • It is tied to your passport. Apply with the passport you will actually travel on, and make sure the name and number match your booking.
  • Exemptions exist and they change. Some nationalities and some categories of traveller have been exempt at different times.
  • A short visit is still a visit. A three-hour tour from JKIA is, for immigration purposes, an entry into Kenya followed by a departure. There is usually no special "layover pass" for leaving the airport.
  • Use the official site. Look-alike websites sometimes offer to "process" applications. The government portal is etakenya.go.ke. Our tour price does not include the eTA, and we cannot apply on your behalf.

A pre-flight checklist for leaving JKIA

Work through this before you pay for a tour, a hotel or anything else outside the airport.

  1. Check entry rules for your passport on etakenya.go.ke. Note whether you need an eTA, are exempt, or need something else.
  2. Check your passport validity and blank pages. Many countries, Kenya included, look at how long your passport is valid beyond your stay. Confirm the current requirement on the official portal.
  3. Check health requirements. Look up whether a vaccination certificate (for example yellow fever) applies to your route, both for entering Kenya and for the country you fly to next. Your onward destination may have its own rules about where you have been.
  4. Check your ticket. On a single through ticket, confirm with your airline that your luggage goes straight to your last stop. On separate tickets, assume you will collect and re-check bags.
  5. Apply early. If you need an eTA, apply as soon as your plans are fixed rather than the night before. You want the approval in hand before you leave home.
  6. Keep copies. Save the approval and carry your onward booking; you may be asked how and when you are leaving.
  7. Only then, book the tour. Once you know you can enter, choose a tour length that fits your connection (see below).

If any step comes back uncertain, the safe decision is to stay airside. A missed flight costs far more than a missed game drive.

How much of your layover is really "tour time"?

On arrival you need to get off the aircraft, queue for immigration and get through customs before you meet your guide. Before your next flight you need to be back with enough time for check-in (if needed), security and boarding. How long all of that takes depends on the time of day, the number of flights landing together and your airline's own check-in deadlines.

Our tours are measured from the moment your driver-guide meets you to the moment you are dropped back at JKIA. They come in seven lengths: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 hours, plus a half-day National Park and Giraffe Centre tour of about 4 to 6 hours. A rough way to plan:

If your tour time is about… What can usually fit
3 hours An express visit: Nairobi National Park or the Giraffe Centre, with a short city drive, or the city on its own
4 hours One headline stop, the park or the Giraffe Centre, plus some of the city
5 to 6 hours Both the park and the Giraffe Centre, if opening times line up
7 to 8 hours Park and Giraffe Centre, city sightseeing and time for a meal or shopping
10 hours The full day: game drive, Giraffe Centre, city, markets and lunch

Opening hours matter as much as the clock. Nairobi National Park is open 6am to 6:30pm and the Giraffe Centre 9am to 5pm, so an early-morning arrival suits a game drive first, while a midday arrival may suit the giraffes first. Send us your exact landing and departure times and we will tell you honestly what is realistic. Full details are in our tours and prices, the route and the FAQ.

On the day: from the arrivals hall to the park gate

Once you have cleared immigration and customs, your driver-guide meets you at JKIA. You will have shared your flight numbers when you booked, so the guide knows when to expect you.

From there the tour is private: only your group, in an air-conditioned vehicle, with bottled water on board. The guide plans the order of stops around opening times and, most importantly, around your departure. A few practical tips from our side:

  • Travel light. If your bags are checked through, you only need a day bag.
  • Carry a card and a little cash. The Nairobi National Park entry fee is not included in the main layover tour, and you may want snacks, crafts or a meal.
  • Tell your guide about any flight change as soon as you hear of it. The plan can change; your flight cannot wait.

On the main tour, Giraffe Centre admission is included. On the half-day National Park and Giraffe Centre tour, both entry fees are paid at the gate; Viator lists USD 54 per person for the park and USD 10 per person for the Giraffe Centre.

When staying airside is the better call

We would rather lose a booking than see someone miss a connection. Stay inside the airport if:

  • you are not sure whether you can enter Kenya on your passport;
  • your eTA (if you need one) has not been approved yet;
  • your connection is short once airport time is taken off at both ends;
  • your incoming flight is often late, or the weather or schedule looks unreliable;
  • your onward airline has an early check-in cut-off and you are on separate tickets.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Kenya eTA if I stay inside JKIA?

If you remain in the transit area and do not pass immigration, you are not entering Kenya. Rules for transit passengers can change, so confirm on the official portal etakenya.go.ke and with your airline, especially if you are on separate tickets.

Do I need an eTA to leave the airport for a few hours?

Leaving the terminal means entering Kenya, so the normal entry rules for your passport apply, however short the visit. For most visitors that means an approved eTA unless they are exempt. Check your own passport on etakenya.go.ke before you book.

Does your tour include the eTA or help with the application?

No. The eTA is a personal application on the official government portal. Our tour price covers the tour itself, and we do not give immigration advice.

How long should my layover be for a Nairobi tour?

Our tours run from 3 to 10 hours of tour time, and you need extra time at the airport on arrival and before departure. Send us your landing and departure times and we will suggest a tour length that leaves a safe margin, or tell you if it does not fit.

What if my incoming flight is delayed?

Your driver-guide works from your flight details. If you are late, the plan is shortened so that you still get back to JKIA in time. If the delay leaves too little time, staying airside is the right call; our cancellation terms are on the Cancellation & Refund page.
