Overnight layover in Nairobi: what you can realistically do

Updated 2026-11-02

An overnight connection at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) can be a long, dull night in the terminal or a morning with giraffes and rhinos. Which one you get depends on one decision: stay airside, or enter Kenya.

First decide: airside or landside

Stay airside if you are on one ticket, your bags are checked through and you just want to rest. You do not pass immigration. Kenya's eTA rules exempt transit passengers who transfer to another flight and do not leave the airport.

Go landside if you want a bed outside the airport, an early game drive or the Giraffe Centre. You pass immigration, so the normal entry rules for your passport apply. For most visitors that means an approved eTA unless they are exempt; the official portal also lists a Transit eTA category. Read our Kenya eTA layover checklist and confirm on etakenya.go.ke before you book anything.

What opens, and when

Nairobi's best layover sights are daytime visits. Nairobi National Park gates open at 6am and close at 6pm (Kenya Wildlife Service park rules), and the Giraffe Centre is open 9am to 5pm every day. That shapes an overnight layover more than anything else:

  • Land late, fly late morning or later: sleep first, then use the morning. An early game drive followed by the Giraffe Centre is the classic overnight plan.
  • Land at night, fly before about 9am: there is little open before your flight, so staying airside is usually the sensible choice.
  • Land early morning, fly in the evening: you effectively have a full day. See how long a layover you need.

A simple overnight plan

  1. Land, clear immigration (with your eTA) and rest at a hotel you have booked yourself.
  2. Early pickup at your hotel or at JKIA by your private driver-guide.
  3. Game drive in Nairobi National Park, then the Giraffe Centre and the city if time allows.
  4. Back to JKIA with time to check in for your onward flight.

Where to stay

Near JKIA keeps the transfer short and suits a late arrival with an early flight. In the city gives you dinner options and suits a longer stopover. Book any hotel yourself; if you add your hotel when you book, we can pick you up there.

Getting back to JKIA

Ask your airline how early you must check in; it depends on the airline, the route and whether you have bags. Keep your passport, eTA approval and onward booking with you. We plan your return from your departure time.

Arriving in daylight or leaving the next afternoon? Use the spare hours for a private Nairobi layover tour from JKIA (3 to 10 hours), with pickup at the airport or your hotel and a planned return for your flight.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave JKIA during an overnight layover?

Only if you can enter Kenya on your passport. Leaving the airport means passing immigration, which for most visitors needs an approved eTA unless they are exempt. Check etakenya.go.ke for your passport.

Is anything worth seeing at night?

The main layover sights are daytime visits: Nairobi National Park gates open 6am to 6pm and the Giraffe Centre is open 9am to 5pm. An overnight layover works best when you sleep first and tour in the morning.

Do you book hotels?

No. We run private tours. Book any hotel directly; we can pick you up from your hotel if you tell us when you book.
