Things to do near Nairobi airport on a layover

JKIA sits on the edge of Nairobi, close to one of the few national parks in the world next to a capital city. That makes a Nairobi layover unusually good for wildlife, as long as you can enter Kenya: check our Kenya eTA layover guide first.
1. Nairobi National Park
A game drive with giraffes, rhinos, zebras and, with luck, lions, against the city skyline. Gates open 6am to 6pm (Kenya Wildlife Service park rules). It is the strongest reason to leave the airport and fits tours of 3 hours or more. The park entry fee is not included in our tour price.
2. The Giraffe Centre
Meet and hand-feed Rothschild's giraffes from a raised platform. Open 9am to 5pm every day, including weekends and public holidays. Admission is included in our tours, and it pairs well with the park when opening times line up.
3. Nairobi city
A drive through the city centre, markets and viewpoints. It fills the gaps around the park and the Giraffe Centre, or works on its own when the park is closed.

Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery
Orphaned baby elephants at their midday mud bath and milk feed, inside Nairobi National Park. The public visit runs daily from 11am to 12 noon (closed 25 December) and is by advance booking only, made directly with the Trust by email; same-day visits are not possible. Visitors also pay the Nairobi National Park entry fee. It only works if your layover covers late morning.
Nairobi National Museum and the city centre
Kenya's history, culture and natural history, plus city-centre landmarks such as the KICC with its view over Nairobi. A good indoor option when the park does not fit; check current opening times and tickets before you go.
Bomas of Kenya and the Karen Blixen Museum
Traditional homesteads and dance performances at Bomas, and the former farmhouse of the Out of Africa author in Karen, near the Giraffe Centre. Both suit longer tours; check performance and opening times first.
Kenyan food and souvenirs
Longer tours leave time for a meal and the markets and craft centres for souvenirs, crafts and textiles. Meals and shopping are paid by you.
