How long a layover do you need to see Nairobi?
Updated 2026-11-02
The time on your ticket is not the time you get in Nairobi. Immigration on arrival, the drive, and getting back through check-in and security before your next flight all come out of it. Plan around time outside the airport, and confirm with your airline how early you must be back.
Before you count hours
- You must be able to enter Kenya. Leaving the airport means passing immigration: see our Kenya eTA checklist and the official portal etakenya.go.ke.
- On separate tickets, allow time to collect and re-check your bags.
- Daytime sights have fixed hours: Nairobi National Park 6am to 6pm, the Giraffe Centre 9am to 5pm.
By layover length
- Under about 6 hours: usually best spent airside; leaving is tight once formalities are counted.
- 6 hours: possibly a 3-hour express tour: the park or the Giraffe Centre with a short city drive.
- 8 hours: a 4- to 5-hour tour; both main stops can fit if opening times line up.
- 10–12 hours: a 6- to 8-hour tour with the park, the Giraffe Centre, the city and a meal.
- Overnight: see our overnight layover guide.
What each stop involves: things to do near Nairobi airport.
Tips that save time
- Choose a tour that tracks your flight, so a late arrival shortens the tour rather than your margin.
- Keep your passport, eTA approval and onward boarding details on you.
- Go private: you leave when you land, not when a group is ready.
Once you know your usable time, pick the matching length of our private Nairobi layover tour (3 to 10 hours); the price for each length is shown before you book.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 6-hour layover in Nairobi enough to leave the airport?
Sometimes. After immigration on arrival and check-in for your next flight, a 6-hour connection may leave room for a 3-hour express tour. Send us your flight times and we will tell you honestly if it fits.
What can I do with an 8-hour layover in Nairobi?
Usually a 4- to 5-hour tour: the park or the Giraffe Centre with some of the city, or both if opening times line up.
How early must I be back at JKIA?
Ask your airline; it depends on the airline, the route and whether you have bags to check. We plan your return from your departure time.
